With our Abercorn office only 5 miles from Linlithgow, which is now home to Donaldsons College, we recently teamed up with Donaldsons to give one of their students a work placement with us, and for our Abercorn staff to learn some very basic finger spelling sign language. This was a highly successful venture, highlighting the issues faced by deaf people in the working environment as well as in their day to day lives, and one which we hope to repeat in the future.
In May last year, Abercorn, Dunblane and Edinburgh staff did a sponsored walk from the Falkirk Wheel to the Abercorn office – a total of 16 miles and several blisters! Becoming something of an annual event, in May this year the chosen route was from Cramond to the Abercorn office. These events raised £4,500 which was split between the Aberlour Trust, the Vine Trust and the MS Society Scotland.
In August, 4 plucky team members from the Inverness office braved the rapids of the River Ness competing in the Children 1st Raft Race, raising £350 towards the overall total for the day which exceeded £10,000.
Through our in-house tuck shop, we have raised £311 for charity. With tuck shop prices only slightly higher than cost, this is perhaps a reflection of the number of chocoholics in our midst!
In addition, several of our team members have raised money for various charities through Race for Life, the Moonwalk, and even walking over hot coals and broken glass!
